Eat & Drink
If we were to sustain ourselves only with produce which is sourced and grown within 100 kilometres of Coonawarra, we’d live very well.
The Limestone Coast is a remarkably productive region with a reliable Mediterranean climate. Viticulture, dairy, broadacre and irrigated cropping, vegetable production, beef cattle, fat lambs, wool sheep, heritage breed pigs and more, create some of the diverse farms surrounding the Royal Oak.
Much of the amazing agricultural produce of the Limestone Coast disappears to the larger population centres further afield, making it a challenge to source small volumes direct from producers. However this is our aim, and to the best of our ability, the food and wine presented at the Royal Oak is sourced from the Limestone Coast.
Did you catch us on the SA Weekender?
The SA Weekender as described on their Facebook page:
“SA Weekender showcases the best of South Australian destinations, attractions and experiences, and can be viewed every Sunday afternoon at 5.30pm on Channel Seven Adelaide. The wine and seafood capital of Australia is explored weekly by Belinda Sloane, Andrew Hayes, Alana Smith, Callum Hann, Kelly Golding, and Michael Keelan to provide you with great suggestions for a perfect weekend spent in our great state!”
2019 Savour Australia™ Awards for Excellence – South Australia
“More than 300 local restaurants, cafes and catering businesses gathered to celebrate the achievements of their peers who were judged in over 60 categories, with the winners announced at the Awards for Excellence ceremony held at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
The Awards for Excellence is a nationally recognised, independently judged awards program that celebrates exceptional service and culinary talent across the state. The Awards for Excellence is the only program in Australia where the judging criteria is determined by consumers who rank what is important to them in the dining experience.
The Awards are judged by an independent team of trained judges who anonymously visit the venues to determine the restaurant/café winners. The scores are based on the entire dining experience from food to the customer service experienced when the judges anonymously dine.”
Our Menu Changes Seasonally
Daily specials can be found on the ‘From the Kitchen Pass’ blackboard by the kitchen, and if you are keen to outsource dining decisions, Sunday night’s ‘Feed me’ allows you to opt for a 5 course meal focusing on the produce of the day.
Our wine list showcases wine from our region; Coonawarra in particular. Wines from Wrattonbully, Mt Benson, the Limestone Coast, Henty and Western Victoria all join to create a succinct yet diverse list.
If you have found a wine in our bottleshop which you would like to enjoy with a meal in the pub, you are welcome to bring it into the pub for a modest corkage fee.

About The Royal Oak Penola
To find out more about the Royal Oak Penola team and our local producers, check out our About page. For an extensive list of the finest wines that the Coonawarra region has to offer, visit our Cellar.
The Royal Oak Penola is situated on the main street of Penola, in the heart of the Coonawarra region, one of the country’s smallest, oldest and finest wine regions. South Australia’s Limestone Coast is one of Australia’s most productive agricultural regions.
We are lucky to live in a region of fabulous produce, so like our menu, our drinks list has a lot of local focus.
In these pages you will find wine, gin, beers, and ciders which have been created by our friends and in the region.
Most of these wines are sourced within 150km of this hotel, however every now and again we dropped something smashing from afar.
These are wines we love, or wines made by friends, and sometimes both. They are identified by an asterisk.
If you are after a wine which isn’t listed here, The Royal Oak Cellars stocks a greater range of wines from around the region and country.
You are welcome to wander out to the cellars, purchase a bottle and enjoy it in the pub for $10 corkage.
